Notes
on John 14. 23 – 29
We started reading
from verse 22 to get into the context.
Different
translations give the question as “Why is it?” to “How is it?” to “What is all
this about?”
Jesus’ reply does
not answer Judas’s question but refers back to v.21 as if Judas has not
spoken. Judas’s question refers to
v.18.
The earlier
discussion on seeing and understanding Jesus’ reply refers to this as
well. It gives an inclusive
answer. v.23
gives a plural reply “we” and “our” will come.
Perhaps John is musing on why Jesus only appeared to some people. Jesus’ reply also looks back to vv 15 –
16.
Seeing
equals revealing and understanding.
Today some people
believe and see miracles whilst some do not.
The Father and
Jesus are together and by v.26 the Spirit will be with the Father and the
Son. The Holy Spirit reminds us of
Jesus’ teaching and the direct link between Jesus and the Spirit.
Jesus teaches what
the Father tells him to. T
he Father sends the Spirit and the Spirit
reminds us what Jesus taught.
This section is a
reworking emphasising earlier verses.
John must see this
as extremely important to keep repeating it.
Jewish expression
of thought
Jesus’ duality of
nature only God can do this.
John makes this
clear that this is what he wants people to believe.
Where the other
Gospels us Son of God or Son of Man John spells it out.
From the beginning
of c.1, John makes his belief clear.
